Description: This is a two-day intensive workshop with fiber/textile artist Regina Jestrow, who has worked with reactive dyes and ice dying for about ten months and natural dyes for over two years. We will explore various experimental fabric dyeing techniques with reactive dyes and ice, dyeing safety, and process training. Participants will use reactive dyes, ice resists, and several methods to achieve dynamic color and pattern variations by expanding on treatments achieved with the classical Shibori and tub-dyeing methods. The workshop class size will be up to 6 students.  There will be time for one-on-one demonstrations and personal assistance.

Skill Level/Experience Needed: beginners or intermediate textile experience

Dates: May 18 - 19, 2024

Materials Provided: All the tools and materials will be provided. I will supply you with 2 yards of cotton fabric to experiment with. In addition, you are welcome to bring your pre-washed cellulose-based textiles (t-shirts, bandanas, scarves, thin canvas, etc.). Nitrile gloves and KN95 masks will be provided when we handle the powered dyes, and you are welcome to bring rubber gloves and better masks or respirators.

Cost: The workshop is $200, including all the materials, some snacks, coffee, and tea.

About the Course: Thank you for your interest in participating in the workshop! I have been working with reactive dyes and ice dying for about ten months, and I would love to share how you can get different results using various shibori techniques.

This course will take place over two days at my home studio in Shenandoah, Miami, FL.

Day one will be the most extensive and informative. I will demonstrate various shibori techniques and discuss safety with reactive dyes. You will prepare pieces of fabric and ice-dye it overnight.

On day two, we will rinse our dyed pieces, dry them in the dryer, or line-dry them. We will discuss safety when cleaning up and self-evaluate our methods and results.

Saturday, May 18 - 10 am - 4 pm (snacks and drinks will be provided, bring your own lunch, please)

Sunday, May 19 - 10 am - 12 pm

We’ll be outdoors on my screened-in porch for part or all day, where I have a parrot in her cage. You might want to bring bug spray. I also have two little dogs, which will be locked up, but dog hair will be around, letting you know in case of allergies.
